Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary- India
In the South Indian State of Kerala, set high in the mountains of the Western Ghats at the border to Tamil Nadu in the districts of Idukki and Pathanamthitta lies the Nature's Gift to the Wildlife Lovers, the Periyar National Park. The park is often called by the name THEKKADY also. Formed with the building of a dam in 1895, this reservoir runs around the contours of the wooded hills, providing water to the local wildlife throughout the year. Though Periyar Kerala is a Tiger Reserve, tourists visit this place to view the Indian elephants in the act of sprinkling water and playfulness by the Periyar lake. Noted for its geomorphology, diversity of wildlife and scenic beauty, the Reserve attracts visitors all over the world and is one of the world's most fascinating natural wildlife reservesThe Periyar National Park was slated under the Project Tiger in the year 1972.
Evergreen or semi-evergreen rain forests are found in the region. There typically tall tropical tree species such as Vateria indica, Cullenia exarillata, Hopea parviflora, Canarium strictum, Artocarpus hirsutus and Bischofia javanica are seen. Scarcely 13% consists of damp leaves forest, 7% of Eucalyptus plantation and 1.5% of grassland.Elephants are the main attraction of this park with about 1000 in number. They are quite appealing during their playfulness with the Periyar lake for the tourists.
Hence, tourists from all over the world visit the place to enjoy this moment. Other mammals found here include gaur, sambar (horse deer), barking deer, mouse deer, Dholes (Indian wild dogs), mongoose, foxes and leopards. It's also a convenient place for excursion to the Cardamom hills, combined with the well known pilgrimage center of the Sabarimala.
